An uncomfortable but honest talk we rarely have and too often avoid

Disclaimer: Not everyone in my circle knows the story or that I was even in that place. I want it clear this is a past event and I’m fine. I wrote it for anyone going through something and needs a helping hand.

“It ain’t what ya takin. It’s who you takin from.” — Omar Little

Yes, that’s a quote from The Wire. No, this isn’t an article about how great The Wire is or how Michael K. Williams helped us accept that being Black isn’t a monolith.

The Negro asked.

A simple question

But a bolder declaration

Am I the bump in the night?

Am I Hell personified?

I think I’m alone

Although they say different

The Butcher looks to continue Griselda’s epic 2020 run

I can’t be the only one that thought that was coke on his shoulder, right?

Welcome to the First 48.’ What’s the First 48? It is simply the first 48 thoughts that come to mind when listening to an album for the first time. It’s not to be taken as a full review of a project. To diminish an artist’s body of work, no matter the quality, to a review consisting of just forty-eight thoughts would be unfair to everybody involved with the project. First 48 is more of a book report outline than an actual book report. Think of the biscuits at Red Lobster, that’s the First 48.’

Nas looks to prove that album number thirteen is actually a lucky number.

Anybody else hungry?

The more things appear to change, the more they stay the same.

I’ve written about how my dad’s death in 2017 changed me as a person. I find myself sitting here on Father’s Day, thinking about my dad again. I’m also looking at Twitter becoming a war zone of people arguing if single moms should celebrate Father’s Day. I was hoping Twitter wouldn’t be Twitter and I wouldn’t be missing my dad as much. However, I’m missing my dad and struggling with the fact that people don’t understand that Black Lives Matter. This is a letter to my dad about being Black.

Dear Dad,

The world is in the midst of a…

The Brothers Rosenthal: Jeff and Eric. Shot by Lens Anderson

In the world of Hip-Hop journalism, there are certain names and brands that even the most casual fan will know: eskay, Elliott Wilson, 2DopeBoyz, John Gotty & The Smoking Section are just a few that most will recognize. There’s another name that fits on that list as well and that’s ItsTheReal.

In this edition of A Reasonable Conversation, I had a chance to catch up with Jeff and Eric and talk about their journey as journalists, how they’ve dealt with rejection, what it’s like to have over 300 podcasts and so much more.

Before we jump into the interview, Jeff…

A Mania that should’ve been one night

What could’ve been

We, as fans of sports, are in a weird period in history due to the COVID-19 outbreak. There’s no Saturday night and Sunday afternoon NBA showcase games, no March Madness, hell we don’t even have baseball. All we have is wrestling.

There’s a saying in show business that “the show must go on,” which is why Vince McMahon and company decided to tape their biggest show of the year WrestleMania and air it over two nights amid a global pandemic. There’s no point in arguing about whether the show should have even happened. Vince McMahon wasn’t going to postpone it…

Random collection to go with random seeding

As we all know by now, thanks to a certain virus that The Simpsons may have or may have not predicted there’s no March Madness this year. That’s right the unofficial month-long holiday has been canceled which leaves a large chunk of the country with nothing to waste time with at work or argue with friends over or better yet to bet their rent money on. Have no fear though, we have the solution.

We here over at Still Crew decided that we would pull together a nice collection of some of the “best” Hip-Hop album covers of all time…
